Remembering the Duck

The Duck was Eddie McCann who recieved his moniker because he was a Day Duck. Duck and Sandy married after our pisshead year. He died a few years after graduation.

Edderd's Memories of "the Duck"

I remember leaning out of the top bunk in Griner's and my pisshead room looking across the hall into Duck's room. Obviously, both doors were open and there was the Duck sitting in his chair in front of his window facing the hall. The newspaper he was reading was raised so that I could only see the top of his head and part of his forehead. I had a football in my hand and thought how funny it would be to surprise the Duck by throwing it into his paper. I tossed the ball, but lost my balance, falling out of the bunk head first. Just before my head hit the floor I saw the ball make a perfect hit just above the top edge of the newspaper in the middle of Duck's forehead. I laughed so hard that I forget the pain of hitting my head. Wow! The Duck was pissed! Grainer laughed for an hour and then he continued to instigate and stir-up things for days. What a good guy the Duck was.

Graner's Memories of the Duck

I can still see Duck walking the hall, the clean-cut and pure guy that he was, in that Texas Boys State choir t-shirt; I can still remember him coming into our pisshead room, walking over to the open window and looking out at a bird's nest that some mother bird had built into the outside window crack, and which Eddurds had nursed and protected and bird-watched day-and-night for days, reaching out and icking up one of the eggs in the nest and holding it in his hand and saying, "Eddurds, is this ceramic??"-- Eddurds had a heart attack.

I still remember when we had the fish shave a Block T in his wooly chest-hairs before he got married and officially became The Duck; I remember that Chinook (we called it "The China-Nook") camper that he and Sandy bought after they got married. What an all-round, all-American, ultimate-nice-guy. I really liked him.
