Stanley
Armin Friedli
Born: October 31, 1950, Brownsville, Texas
Died: August 1, 1997
Stan (frog
Friedli) was born in Brownsville but lived his first 12 years
in Mexico. His father managed a dairy in the highlands of
Mexico near Monterrey.
His family moved to San Antonio in 1962 and
Stan later attended Roosevelt High School, graduating with
Honors in 1968. He was president of his senior class, a member
of the National Honor Society, and named "Mr Teenage
San Antonio" by the Optimist Club. He also was an Eagle
Scout.
He was accepted to the Air Force Academy but
left in disappointment the first summer of orientation, when
he found that he could not be a pilot. He then attended Princeton
his first full semester of college but decided that the students
of Princeton where not his type of people.
That's how he found his way to Texas A&M
and Heaven's 11. One of his first greetings was with senior
Peter Michael Reed who shared this personal credo with Stan:
" I hate frogs!" Then he followed up by ordering
that "frog" Friedli was to "ribbit" every
time his left foot struck the floor while he was in the dorm.
In spite of the special hazing, Stan stuck with
it along with the rest of us. He went on to become a Ross
Volunteer and he was the Corps Scholastic Officer his senior
year, a truly great honor.
After graduation he trained as an Air Force
navigator and was later stationed at Dyess AFB (Abilene, TX)
after graduation from training. Flying C-130s he literally
saw the world including South America, Europe, and North Africa.
He even spent time in Timbuktu flying aid missions for the
U.N.
After fulfilling his Air Force commitment, he
left the service and enrolled in the law school at Texas Tech
University. He graduated in 1980 with his JD and an MBA.
He met Rebecca Joy Parker while attending Texas
Tech and married her on March 18, 1980. He didn't care to
become a lawyer so he never took his bar exam. Nevertheless,
he use his education with several different positions as a
consultant.
He and Becky had 6 children: Luke, John, David,
Christina, Bonnie and James.
Stan was active in his church and served as
an elder.
frog Friedli was a heck of a guy, and his early
departure from this life was a significant loss to us all.
It was my honor to have known Stan and to have spent many
an hour riding in my car back and forth to A&M with him.
